The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the most visited attraction in the UAE capital — and once you've stood beneath its 82 white marble domes, you'll understand why. Here's everything you need to know to plan the perfect visit.
Why It's Special
Completed in 2007, the mosque is one of the largest in the world and can welcome more than 40,000 worshippers. Its numbers are staggering: over 1,000 columns inlaid with mother-of-pearl, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,700 square metres, woven by 1,200 artisans), and seven chandeliers dripping with Swarovski crystals — the largest weighing around twelve tonnes.
But statistics don't capture the feeling of walking across the vast white courtyard as the marble reflects the sky, or seeing the domes glow at dusk. It's consistently rated among the world's most beautiful buildings.
Dress Code
The mosque enforces a modest dress code strictly:
- Everyone: shoulders and knees covered; no transparent or tight clothing
- Women: hair covered with a headscarf — complimentary abayas and scarves are provided at the entrance
- Men: long trousers; no sleeveless shirts
On a guided Abu Dhabi city tour, your guide handles the entry process and makes sure everyone is dressed appropriately before arrival — one less thing to think about.
Opening Hours & Entry
Entry is free. The mosque is generally open to visitors Saturday–Thursday from 9 AM to 10 PM, and Friday afternoons from 4:30 PM (hours change during Ramadan). Note that visitors must register online in advance or enter with a licensed tour — another reason a guided visit with express entry is the stress-free option.
Photography Rules
Photography is welcome in most areas — the courtyards, the reflective pools and the main prayer hall. A few etiquette rules apply: no posed couple shots (no hugging or holding hands in photos), always ask before photographing other visitors, and follow staff directions in the prayer halls.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning (9–10 AM): coolest temperatures, softest light, smallest crowds
- Late afternoon: warm golden light on the marble — photographers' favourite
- Sunset/dusk: the domes and pools are floodlit; the blue hour here is magical
How to Visit
The mosque sits about 25 minutes from central Abu Dhabi and around 90 minutes from Dubai. The easiest way to visit is on a guided city tour with hotel pickup:
